Takes 3 AA batteries (included).  Personal note: Looking at this toy and seeing as the whole battery compartment comes out (see pictures), I see no reason why it can't be washed in the washing machine, it looks like that was the intent with the battery casing being removable. Previously owned, great slightly used condition, some light markings on tummy.
