    Description

Medieval Brass Scallop Badge from Pilgrim Hat, 1400's
This detecting find from the Netherlands was used as a badge for the hats of those who were on pilgrimage. Originally the scallop shaped badges were worn by pilgrims who came to visit the shrine of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, but after some time the badges were used as the symbol of pilgrimage itself, rather than just the badge of the Compostela shrine. By the 11th century the shrine of St. James in Santiago de Compostela was attracting pilgrims from all over Europe. The pilgrims at first used actual scallop shells as their symbol, but as the supply of natural shells were exhausted, metal versions were sold instead. In the 13th century there were 100 licensed badge makers in Compostela.
    About 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". (4 c.m. x 4 c.m.)
Paypal only, paid within one day of purchase. Please see all photos carefully as to condition. Images of pilgrim's wearing hats are not part of the sale.
This is an incredible artifact of Medieval Christian devotion.
